The tomb of Humaioon, Delhi, India, c1860. Artist: W Miller

The tomb of Humaioon, Delhi, India, c1860. The rebel sons and grandson of the King of Delhi took refuge in this mausoleum, from whence they were taken prisoners, and afterwards shot. The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began in the town of Meerut and soon erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions across many regions of Company-ruled north-central India. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to British power in that region and it was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion is also often known as the Indian Mutiny, the Sepoy Mutiny, the Great Rebellion, the Revolt of 1857 and occasionally, in India, as the First War of Independence. From The History of the Indian Mutiny, volume VII, by Charles Ball, published by The London Printing & Publishing Company (c1860)

The Tomb of Humaioon, Delhi, India, c1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures the haunting beauty and historical significance of this iconic mausoleum. The image showcases the intricate architecture and serene surroundings of the tomb while also shedding light on a dark chapter in Indian history. The rebel sons and grandson of the King of Delhi sought refuge within these very walls during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. However, their sanctuary was short-lived as they were eventually captured and executed. This rebellion, also known as the Indian Mutiny or Sepoy Mutiny, posed a significant threat to British power in north-central India. The photograph's black-and-white composition adds an air of timelessness to this poignant scene. It transports us back to a bygone era when India was under British rule – a period marked by both grandeur and oppression. Through this image, we are reminded not only of the architectural splendor but also of the tumultuous events that unfolded within its vicinity. It serves as a powerful reminder of how history can shape landscapes and leave behind lasting imprints. This print from "The History of the Indian Mutiny" publication allows us to reflect on our collective past while appreciating the artistic vision captured by Charles Ball, W Miller, and William Purser. Their work immortalizes not just physical structures like tombs but also intangible concepts such as rebellion, resilience, and remembrance.
