EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 10th century Uma-Maheshvara figurine is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of South Asia during the medieval period. The sculpture, originating from India or Southeast Asia, depicts Shiva in his Ardhanarishvara form, where he is united with his consort Parvati. Uma, also known as Gauri or Goddess Durga, is represented as the goddess of air and is seated on Shiva's lap in the lotus position or Padmasana. Shiva is shown in a calm and serene posture, with one hand in the gesture of protection (Abhaya Mudra) and the other in the gesture of bestowal of boons (Varada Mudra). The intricate carving on the stone sculpture showcases the masterful craftsmanship of the unknown artist, with every detail from their faces to their ornate jewelry meticulously hand-carved. This Uma-Maheshvara sculpture is a significant representation of the Hindu deity's union with his divine consort and is an essential piece of the vast and complex Hindu mythology. Currently, this precious artifact is housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), providing a valuable opportunity for scholars, art enthusiasts, and visitors to appreciate the beauty and significance of this ancient work of art.
