This 18th century print depicts the interior of the Schouwburg, or Theatre Royal, in Amsterdam during a performance for Willem V, the Prince of Orange and Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic, and his consort, Princess Wilhelmina of Prussia, on June 1, 1768. The tragic play "Demophontes" (Treurspel Demophontes) is being performed on stage, as evidenced by the actors in period costumes and the somber mood of the scene.
