EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Vladimir Ilich Lenin, the influential Russian Bolshevik leader, in the heart of power at the Kremlin in Moscow during October 1918. Lenin's remarkable journey began when he assumed leadership of the Bolshevik faction of the Russian Social Democratic and Labour Party in 1903. His involvement in revolutionary politics dates back to his time as a law student in the late 1880s. However, his dedication to change led him down a path filled with hardships. In 1895, he was arrested by authorities and endured a year-long imprisonment followed by four years of exile to Siberia. Seeking safety abroad due to mounting opposition, Lenin left Russia in 1906 but returned after the February Revolution of 1917. Lenin faced numerous challenges throughout his political career. After fleeing to Finland following an unsuccessful workers uprising in July, he played a pivotal role as the Bolsheviks overthrew Alexander Kerensky's Provisional Government through another revolution that took place in October. As a result, Lenin was elected Premier of the Soviet Union. The toll taken on Lenin's health is evident from this image; an assassination attempt earlier that year had wounded him severely. Combined with the strains brought about by revolution and subsequent Civil War, his well-being deteriorated further after suffering partial paralysis from a stroke in 1922. Today preserved within Moscow's State Museum of History collection, this print serves as both a historical artifact and testament to one man's unwavering commitment towards shaping Russia's destiny amidst turbulent times.
