EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning aerial photograph, taken in July 1920 by Aerofilms, captures the breathtaking view of Blackpool, Lancashire's iconic seaside resort. The image showcases the Blackpool Tower, an iconic landmark that had stood proudly since its completion in 1894. However, the tower's steelwork had not received proper maintenance since then, leading to corrosion. The photograph offers a bird's-eye perspective of the tower, the sandy beach, the Winter Gardens, and the towering big wheel. The Winter Gardens, a popular entertainment venue, can be seen in the lower right corner of the image, while the big wheel, a more recent addition to the Blackpool scene, dominates the left side. Between 1921 and 1924, a significant restoration project took place. All of the tower's steelwork was renewed to prevent further corrosion and ensure the longevity of this beloved structure. This photograph serves as a testament to the rich history of Blackpool and the ongoing efforts to preserve its treasured landmarks.
