Hornsey Road Baths PLA01_03_0113

Hornsey Road Baths, Hornsey Road, Finsbury Park, Islington, Greater London. The entrance block of the former Hornsey Road Baths, Islington, seen from the south at dusk, showing the illuminated neon name sign and figure of a diving woman on the south elevation.
The Hornsey Road Baths were built in 1892 and closed in 1991. The swimming pools were demolished and the site redeveloped as Tiltman Place, with blocks of apartments. The entrance block (or gatehouse) and laundry buildings were converted into apartments known as The Gatehouse. The neon sign of a diving woman on the south elevation is one of 12 signs to be commissioned for baths in London in the 1930s; it is the sole surviving example

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting beauty of Hornsey Road Baths, a historic landmark in Finsbury Park, Islington. Taken at dusk, the image showcases the illuminated neon name sign and an exquisite figure of a diving woman on the south elevation of the entrance block. The sight is truly mesmerizing as it stands against the backdrop of a serene evening sky. Built in 1892, Hornsey Road Baths served as a popular swimming destination for nearly a century before its closure in 1991. While the swimming pools have been demolished and replaced by modern apartments known as Tiltman Place, this iconic entrance block has been thoughtfully converted into luxurious apartments called The Gatehouse. What makes this photograph even more remarkable is that it features one of only twelve commissioned neon signs for baths in London during the 1930s. This particular sign depicting a diving woman is not only rare but also holds great historical significance as it is now considered to be the sole surviving example. The image evokes nostalgia for an era when public baths were central to community life and recreation. It serves as a reminder of our rich architectural heritage and celebrates how these spaces have evolved over time while retaining their unique charm.
