EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to February 1939, capturing a significant moment in the history of the Welfield Home for Aged and Infirm Women in Hatfield New Town, Hertfordshire. Once known as the Hatfield Parish Workhouse, this imposing building dates all the way back to 1788. In this particular shot, we are granted a glimpse into one of the wards that housed elderly women who sought refuge within its walls. The room exudes an air of tranquility and care as it serves as both a nursing home and hospital for those in need. Rows of neatly arranged beds line each side of the ward, providing comfort to those resting upon them. The photograph beautifully captures not only the physical space but also tells a story about health and welfare during that era. It reminds us of society's commitment to caring for our elders even amidst challenging times. Adding warmth to this scene are delicate flower arrangements thoughtfully placed on bedside tables, symbolizing hope and renewal. These blossoms serve as gentle reminders that despite their age or ailments, these women deserve love, respect, and dignity. Preserved by Norman Kingsley Harrison on behalf of Historic England's archive collection, this image stands as a testament to our collective responsibility towards caring for our elderly population throughout history.
