EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking head-and-shoulders portrait of Abraham Lincoln was captured by renowned artist Charles A. Barry during a sitting in Springfield, Illinois, in June 1860. At the time, Lincoln was campaigning for the Republican nomination for the presidency. The image shows Lincoln facing right, with a serious expression and piercing gaze. His hair is parted in the middle and slicked back, revealing a prominent forehead and deep-set eyes. The folds of his suit coat are crisp and well-defined, adding to the sense of formality and gravitas. Charles A. Barry was a skilled artist and photographer who had previously worked as a lithographer and engraver. He was known for his ability to capture the likenesses of his subjects with great accuracy and detail. This portrait of Lincoln is considered one of the most authentic and lifelike representations of the 16th president from this period in his life. The photograph was taken just months before Lincoln's election to the presidency, and it would become an iconic image of the man who would lead the country through its greatest crisis, the Civil War. The portrait serves as a powerful reminder of Lincoln's determination, intelligence, and leadership, and it continues to captivate and inspire people around the world.
