EDITORS COMMENTS
December 14, 1911: Roald Amundsen's Historic Achievement at the South Pole This photograph captures the moment of triumph for Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) as he and his team reached the South Pole on December 14, 1911. Amundsen, the first human to achieve this remarkable feat, is shown here standing proudly before a makeshift flag, symbolizing his country's claim on this historic milestone. Amundsen's successful expedition to the South Pole was the culmination of years of meticulous planning and relentless determination. He and his team of five men, including Olav Bjaaland, Helmer Hanssen, Kristian Birkeland, Hjalmar Johansen, and Olaf Floene, embarked on their journey from their base camp at the Bay of Whales on October 17, 1911. They faced numerous challenges, including extreme weather conditions, treacherous ice, and the ever-present threat of frostbite and scurvy. Despite these obstacles, Amundsen's team pressed on, driven by their determination to reach the pole before their primary rival, Robert Falcon Scott's British team. On December 14, 1911, their efforts paid off when they reached the South Pole, making Amundsen the first explorer in history to achieve this remarkable feat. This photograph, taken shortly after their arrival at the pole, serves as a poignant reminder of Amundsen's historic achievement and the indomitable human spirit of exploration. The team returned safely to their base camp on January 25, 1912, and Amundsen went on to become a national hero in Norway and a legendary figure in the annals of polar exploration.
