EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Angelfish, Ponyfish, or Ruse, Hippolyte, and Cloquet, Poulain, or Leiognathus Equulus," is an exquisite example of natural history illustration from the early 19th century. The illustration is taken from Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was produced by a team of skilled artisans, including painter J.G. Pretre, engraver Massard, and director Turpin. The engraving features two distinct species of tropical marine fish. On the left, the Angelfish, or Hippolyte, is depicted with its vibrant, colorful scales and distinctive triangular dorsal fin. Angelfish are known for their beautiful, varied colors and patterns, which can range from bright reds and yellows to more subdued greens and browns. They are also noted for their unique, upturned mouths, which give them a curious expression. On the right, the Ponyfish, or Leiognathus Equulus, is shown with its elongated, slender body and small, rounded dorsal fin. Ponyfish are named for their resemblance to ponies, with their long, slender bodies and pointed tails. They are also known for their ability to breathe air through their gills when they are out of water, making them unique among fish. This beautiful illustration is a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of the natural history illustrators of the past. The intricate stipple engraving technique used to create the image allows for exquisite detail and depth, making it a true masterpiece of natural history illustration.
