EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the moment of arrest of the notorious conspirator Guy Fawkes in connection to the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. The year was 5 November, and Fawkes and his co-conspirators had planned to blow up the House of Lords in London, assassinate King James I, and install a Catholic monarch on the English throne. The photograph, taken in 1847 by an unknown photographer and published by Mary Evans Picture Library, depicts Fawkes being apprehended in the undercroft of the Parliament building, where the explosives were to be detonated. A group of men, led by the Chief Minister Robert Cecil, Lord Salisbury, and the Chief of the King's Secret Service, Thomas Wintour, are seen surrounding Fawkes with torches in hand. Fawkes, wearing a hat and a coat, is shown with a determined look on his face as he is held down by two men, one of whom is brandishing an axe as a weapon. The other men in the image are also armed, adding to the tense and dangerous atmosphere of the scene. The Gunpowder Plot was a significant event in English history, and the arrest of Guy Fawkes marked the end of the conspiracy. The annual commemoration of the event, known as Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night, continues to be celebrated in the UK to this day, with bonfires and fireworks being lit in memory of the failed assassination attempt and the preservation of the monarchy and the Protestant faith in England.
