EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant and poignant photograph, the Christening of Francis David Charteris, the baby son of the Hon. Hugo and Violet Charteris, takes place at the country seat of Lord and Lady Elcho, Stanway Hall, in Gloucestershire, England, in 1912. The newborn infant, swaddled in white and cradled in his mother's arms, is surrounded by the loving gaze of his family and godfather, Sir Arthur Balfour, the former British Prime Minister. To the left of the image, Lady Diana Manners, younger sister of Lady Elcho, looks on with a warm and proud expression. Violet, the mother, gazes down at her son with a tender smile, her own mother, Lady Elcho, offers a supportive hand. The proud father, Hugo, who would later become Lord Elcho, stands behind his wife, a proud and dapper figure in his suit and bowler hat. Sir Arthur Balfour, a respected statesman and close family friend, completes the group, his hand resting gently on Hugo's shoulder. This heartwarming moment captures the joy and love of a family coming together to celebrate the arrival of a new life. Tragically, Hugo's life was cut short when he was killed in action on 23 April 1916 during World War I, leaving behind his wife and young son. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing precious moments with loved ones.
