This engraving depicts a pivotal moment in the Conquest of Mexico, specifically the capture of Aztec Emperor Cuauhtemoc by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Alvarado's lieutenant, Geronimo de Aguilar, under the command of Francisco de Garcia Holguin. The image, taken from Bernal Diaz del Castillo's "The Truthful History of the Conquest of New Spain," shows Cuauhtemoc and his family attempting to escape in a canoe after the defeat in the Battle of Tenochtitlan in 1521. The Aztec emperor, wearing a distinctive feathered headdress and carrying a shield, is shown being seized by Garcia Holguin and his men as they row towards the brigantine in the background. The scene illustrates the clash between the indigenous people of the Americas and the European conquerors, highlighting the power dynamics and the beginning of the end of the Aztec Empire.
