EDITORS COMMENTS
This title page marks the beginning of the groundbreaking work that would come to be known as the Cranmer Bible, or the "Great Bible," published in 1540. The title, "The Holy Bible, Contayning the Olde Testament and the Newe, translated out of the originall tongues: and with the former translations diligently compared and revised, by the most reverent and learned fathers in England, and afterwards by Thomas Cranmer, Lord Archbishop of Canterbury. And lately set forth this present yeare, M.D.XL," proudly announces the English translation of the sacred texts. At the time, England was in the midst of religious upheaval. King Henry VIII had recently broken away from the Roman Catholic Church, and the need for an English Bible was paramount. Previous translations, such as the Tyndale Bible, had been incomplete or suppressed. Cranmer's Bible, however, was a comprehensive and authorized version, making it a significant milestone in the history of the English language and the English Reformation. The title page is adorned with intricate decorative elements, including a large, ornate cross at the top, flanked by the Tudor rose and the fleur-de-lis, symbolizing the union of England and France under Henry VIII. The page is also filled with elaborate lettering, including the Latin inscription, "Hoc est Verbum Dei," which translates to "This is the Word of God." The Cranmer Bible would go on to have a profound impact on the English-speaking world. It paved the way for further translations, such as the Geneva Bible and the King James Version, and played a crucial role in the spread of literacy and the development of the English language. This title page serves as a testament to the historical significance of the Cranmer Bible and its enduring influence on the religious and literary landscape of England and beyond.
