EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, the Ketteler Memorial, or "The Protection of Peace Gate" as it is now known, stands proudly at the intersection of Changan Avenue and Dongdang Street in Beijing, China. This historic paifang, or memorial gate, was originally erected in 1905 at the site where German career diplomat Clemens August Freiherr von Ketteler was tragically killed during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. Von Ketteler, a respected and influential figure in German diplomatic circles, was on a mission to negotiate the release of foreign diplomats and civilians who had been taken hostage by the Boxers, a militant anti-foreigner society. Despite his efforts for peace, he was brutally murdered on May 24, 1900, in the midst of the chaos and violence that engulfed Beijing during the rebellion. Following the end of the Boxer Rebellion in 1901, the Ketteler Memorial was officially abolished, and in 1918, it was moved to its current location in Zhongshan Park. The gate was then renamed "The Victory of Justice Gate," later changed to "The Protection of Peace Gate," reflecting the significance of von Ketteler's role in promoting diplomacy and peace during a tumultuous time in Chinese history. The Ketteler Memorial is a stunning example of traditional Chinese architectural gating style, with its intricately carved arches and elegant design. The gate is a testament to the rich cultural history of Beijing and the enduring legacy of the diplomats and civilians who played a role in shaping the city's past. This photograph captures the timeless beauty and historical significance of the Ketteler Memorial, standing proudly as a symbol of peace and diplomacy amidst the bustling streets of Beijing.
