Du Barry: The Rise and Fall of a Parisian Shopgirl Turned Royal Favorite, Executed During the French Revolution This miniature painting depicts Jeanne Becu, better known as Madame du Barry, a Parisian shopgirl who rose to become the favored mistress of King Louis XV of France in the mid-18th century. Born in 1743, Jeanne began her career as a saleswoman in a lace shop in Paris. Her striking beauty and charm soon attracted the attention of the king, who took her under his wing and granted her the title of "Mademoiselle de Paulmy-Montbret," making her a lady of the royal court. Du Barry's rise to power was meteoric. She became the king's official mistress in 1768 and was lavished with wealth, titles, and privileges. She built a magnificent chateau at Marly-le-Roi and was known for her extravagant lifestyle and generous patronage of the arts. However, her relationship with the king ended in 1774 when he fell in love with another woman. Despite being cast out of the royal court, Du Barry continued to live a wealthy and luxurious life until the French Revolution. In 1793, she was arrested and charged with treason and other crimes, likely due to her association with the fallen monarchy. She was brought to trial before the Revolutionary Tribunal and was found guilty. On December 8, 1793, Du Barry was guillotined in Paris, marking the tragic end to a life that had begun in a humble Parisian shop. This miniature painting captures the essence of Du Barry's story - the transformation of a shopgirl into a royal favorite, and the tragic fall from grace that came with the revolution. The painting serves as a reminder of the complex and often unpredictable nature of history, and the ways in which the personal stories of individuals can intersect with larger historical events.
