This photograph captures the distinguished figure of Canon Edward Lyttelton during his tenure as Headmaster of Haileybury College from 1890 to 1905. Born in 1855, Lyttelton's impressive career began as a schoolmaster before he was ordained as a deacon in the Church of England in 1883 and later becoming a priest in 1885. Haileybury College, located in Hertfordshire, England, was renowned for its rigorous academic curriculum and emphasis on sports and character development. Under Lyttelton's leadership, the college flourished, and he is remembered fondly by many as a dedicated and inspiring headmaster. Following his time at Haileybury, Lyttelton was appointed as the Headmaster of the prestigious Eton College in 1905, where he continued to shape the lives of young men until his retirement in 1920. Lyttelton's impact on education extended beyond his roles as a schoolmaster and headmaster, as he was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Civil Law degree from the University of Oxford in 1911.
