Firefighters in action with hosepipes at night, at a fire in Shad Thames, 19 February 1958, at the premises of Corry & Co, showing the Gainsford Street/Maguire Street corner of the building. At this stage the first floor was completely involved, with the fire spreading rapidly to the upper floors and roof. After a partial internal collapse, crews were withdrawn from inside and the main attack was concentrated with escapes and extension ladders pitched to the various floors on three sides of the building. This photograph depicts London Fire Brigade firefighters in the midst of their heroic efforts to extinguish a raging inferno at Corry & Co premises located on the corner of Gainsford Street and Maguire Street in Shad Thames, SE1, on the chilly night of 19 February 1958. The first floor of the building was already engulfed in flames, with the fire rapidly spreading to the upper floors and roof. The intense heat and darkness of the scene necessitated the withdrawal of crews from inside the building, and the focus shifted to external attacks using hosepipes and extension ladders. The firefighters, dressed in their iconic uniforms and helmets, bravely battled the flames, their hoses spewing jets of water in an attempt to contain the blaze. The night sky was filled with thick, smoky air, as the fire continued to spread and illuminate the darkened streets of London.
