EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the founding members of the prestigious Royal Aero Club in 1917. Seated in the center is Mr. Hedges Butler, a pioneering balloonist who had made a name for himself in the early days of aviation. To his left is Miss Vera Butler, an intriguing figure who is believed to be Vera Llewellyn Butler, the sister of Mr. Hedges Butler. She became the first woman to join the esteemed club, a remarkable achievement for the time. To Miss Butler's left is the enigmatic figure of Charles Rolls. Rolls was a visionary and a pioneer in his own right, co-founding the Rolls-Royce Motor Company and becoming one of the most distinguished figures in the history of aeronautics. Tragically, Rolls met his end in an aeroplane accident in 1910, but his legacy lives on in the annals of aviation history. The woman on the far left of the photograph is Mrs. Nicholls, who was before her marriage known as Miss Nicholls. She was the first woman to become a member of the Royal Aero Club, an impressive feat that underscores the progressive spirit of the organization. The photograph is a testament to the pioneering spirit and determination of these early aviation pioneers, who pushed the boundaries of what was possible in the realm of flight." This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the history of aviation and the early days of the Royal Aero Club. The founders, including the first woman member, are captured in a moment of history, their faces etched with a mix of determination, excitement, and a sense of the unknown that comes with exploring new frontiers. The image is a reminder of the pioneering spirit that has driven aviation forward, from ballooning to powered flight and beyond.
