EDITORS COMMENTS
This sepia-toned oval print captures the distinguished visage of George Francis Hamilton, 2nd Baron Woodbury and Son of the 1st Duke of Abercorn (1845-1927). Born into the noble Abercorn family, Hamilton made a name for himself as a prominent politician and administrator in India during the late 19th century. George Francis Hamilton was the eldest son of James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn, and his wife, Lady Agnes Elizabeth Hamilton. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, before embarking on a career in public service. In 1876, Hamilton was appointed as the Chief Commissioner of the North-Western Provinces and Oudh in India, a position he held until 1880. During his tenure in India, Hamilton played a significant role in the administration of the region, implementing policies aimed at improving infrastructure, education, and economic development. He was also known for his efforts to quell rebellions and maintain law and order. Upon his return to Britain, Hamilton entered politics, serving as a Member of Parliament for several constituencies. He was a staunch Conservative and a supporter of the party's imperialist policies. Hamilton's political career was marked by his commitment to public service and his dedication to the welfare of his constituents. This photograph, taken in the mid-19th century, captures Hamilton in the prime of his life. He is depicted wearing the insignia of a wing collar and a botie, symbols of his noble status. The sepia tone adds an air of historical authenticity, transporting us back to a bygone era of British colonial rule and political intrigue.
