EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the H.M.S. E7, an iconic E-class submarine of the Royal Navy, as it bravely served in the treacherous waters of the Dardanelles during World War I. Laid down in 1912, the E7 was one of the most advanced submarines of its time, and it quickly proved its worth in the campaign to force the Turkish Straits and secure a sea route to Russia. In the summer of 1914, the E7, under the command of Lieutenant Commander C. R. F. Crombie, sank thirteen enemy ships, making it one of the most successful submarines of the Dardanelles campaign. However, on August 12, 1914, the E7 met its end in a dramatic and unexpected way. While attempting to navigate the narrow and heavily defended waters, the submarine became entangled in Turkish anti-submarine nets. Unable to free itself, the crew was forced to abandon the vessel. With no other option, the E7 was scuttled, marking the end of its illustrious military career. This haunting image of the H.M.S. E7 serves as a poignant reminder of the brave men and women who risked their lives in the service of their country during the First World War. The E7's legacy continues to inspire naval history enthusiasts and military historians alike, who continue to study its role in the Dardanelles campaign and the broader history of the Royal Navy during this pivotal period in world history.
