EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a collection of hand axes made of quartzite, showcased at the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. These artifacts date back to the Mousterian Culture, which spanned from approximately 100,000 to 40,000 BC. The Mousterian Culture is closely associated with the Neanderthals, who inhabited Europe during the Middle Paleolithic period. The hand axes, discovered in Petite Lande, a region in southwestern France, are prime examples of the Mousterian Industry, a lithic technology characterized by the production of flint and other hard stone tools. Quartzite, a durable and hard stone, was a preferred material for tool-making during this time due to its ability to retain sharp edges. The Neanderthals, our close evolutionary relatives, were skilled hunters and gatherers, and these hand axes would have been essential instruments for their daily lives. They were likely used for a variety of tasks, including butchering animals, preparing hides, and possibly even as projectile points. This collection of hand axes offers a glimpse into the past, providing valuable insights into the lives of our ancient ancestors and the technological advancements they achieved during the Stone Age. The National Museum of Denmark preserves and displays these precious artifacts, allowing us to connect with our past and better understand the rich history of human prehistory.
