Heads Up- Tails Down by Howard K. Elcock

An impression of the famous Roulette Room in the Casino at Monte Carlo. Although baccarat and other games of chance are played, the Casino is unique in that it is the only place where roulette is permitted by the Government, and, despite rumours that it may be permitted elsewhere on the Riviera in the near future, the political situation makes it extremely improbable that it will be played anywhere else for many years to come. A typical illustration by Howard Elcock showing the players at a roulette table in the casino at Monte Carlo. Elcock produced a number of illustrations for ILN magazines during the inter-war years, notably of the privileged classes at fashionable resorts or events, and particularly on holiday on the Riviera

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Howard K. Elcock, titled 'Heads Up- Tails Down,' transports us back to the historic Roulette Room in the iconic Casino at Monte Carlo. The Casino, with its unique status as the only legal venue for roulette in Monaco, has long been a symbol of glamour and intrigue. Despite rumors of potential changes in the political climate allowing roulette to be played elsewhere on the Riviera, the government's stance maintains its exclusivity, making it an unlikely prospect for the foreseeable future. Elcock's impressionistic illustration showcases the players in the Roulette Room, engrossed in their games of chance. The Casino at Monte Carlo was a popular subject for Elcock, who produced numerous illustrations for ILN magazines during the inter-war years. His works often depicted the privileged classes at fashionable resorts and events, particularly on the Riviera. The year is 1929, and the atmosphere is thick with anticipation and excitement. The numbered table, the spinning wheel, and the tense faces of the players all contribute to the electrifying ambiance of the Casino. Elcock's masterful brushstrokes bring the scene to life, immortalizing a moment in history that continues to captivate us today. As we gaze at this image, we are transported back to a time when the Casino at Monte Carlo was the epitome of luxury and exclusivity, a place where fortune and fate intertwined in a dance of chance.
