EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Jane Dieulafoy, born Jeanne-Paule-Henriette-Rachelle Magre, is seen in an elegant pose, her intense gaze fixed on an unseen horizon. Born on February 14, 1851, in Bordeaux, France, Jane was the wife of renowned French archaeologist and engineer, Marcel-Auguste Dieulafoy. An accomplished archaeologist and writer in her own right, Jane's contributions to the field of archaeology and the documentation of ancient civilizations are a testament to her intellectual prowess and adventurous spirit. Married to Marcel-Auguste in 1881, the couple embarked on numerous archaeological expeditions together, most notably to Persepolis in Iran, where they made significant discoveries that advanced the understanding of ancient Persian culture. Jane's role in these expeditions extended beyond that of a mere companion, as she documented the findings, sketched artifacts, and even participated in the excavations herself. Her written works, including "The Unequal Marriage," "The Harem of Persepolis," and "The Letters of a Persepolitan Lady," offer unique insights into the lives of women in ancient Persia and the challenges of conducting archaeological research in the late 19th century. Jane's groundbreaking work paved the way for future female archaeologists and scholars, demonstrating that women could make significant contributions to the field. Jane Dieulafoy passed away on March 12, 1916, leaving behind a rich legacy in archaeology, writing, and the exploration of history. This photograph, taken during her productive and adventurous life, captures the determination and intellect of a woman who defied societal expectations and made her mark on history.
