This photograph, taken in 1907, showcases the historic Kashmiri Gate in Delhi, India, a significant landmark that played a pivotal role during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. The Kashmiri Gate, also known as Kashmere Gate, served as a strategic point for Indian soldiers during the uprising against the British East India Company's rule. Soldiers fired volleys of cannonballs from this gate at the British forces and assembled here to plan their resistance. The British, in turn, used the gate to prevent the mutineers from entering the city. The damage evident on the gate's walls is a poignant reminder of the intense struggles that took place here over a century ago. The arches, though majestic, bear the scars of the past, with visible signs of damage from the cannonballs that were once fired through them. The military engineer Robert Smith, who played a crucial role in the British defense during the mutiny, would have been all too familiar with these battle-scarred walls.
