EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, Lady Mercy Greville (1904-1968) is captured as a young girl, immersed in the magical world of a Little Red Riding Hood picture book. Dressed in a pretty white dress with a lace collar, Lady Mercy's striking features and expressive gaze convey a sense of wonder and delight as she loses herself in the story. Born to Francis Richard Charles Guy Greville, the 5th Earl of Warwick, and Frances Evelyn Maynard, Lady Mercy's lineage was steeped in history and nobility. Her first marriage was to Basil Herbert Dean, son of Harding Hewer Dean, in 1925. However, their union was short-lived, and they were divorced in 1933. Lady Mercy's second marriage was to Patrick Henry Noel Gamble, son of the Very Rev. Reginald Gamble, in 1933. This marriage also ended in divorce in 1936. In the same year, she married her third husband, Richard Maurice Marter, son of Captain W. M. Marter. Despite her tumultuous personal life, Lady Mercy's childhood innocence shines through in this image. The delicate folds of her white dress, the intricate detailing of her lace collar, and the timeless charm of the picture book all contribute to a sense of nostalgia and wonder. This photograph offers a glimpse into the life of a young Lady Mercy Greville, a noblewoman whose story is intertwined with the rich history of her family and her times.
