EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph taken during World War II, we see a group of firemen from the London Fire Brigade (LFB) getting some rest in the basement of New Cross sub-station, located on Monson Road in SE London. The year was 1940, and the city was under relentless attack from enemy bombs during the Blitz. The firemen, weary from long hours of fighting fires and providing assistance to those affected by the bombings, are seen here making the best of their limited rest periods. The basement of the sub-station has been transformed into makeshift quarters, with forty-odd bunk beds made from salvaged timber. The firemen, dressed in their uniforms, are spread out over the beds, some snoring lightly, others deep in slumber. The scene is a poignant reminder of the harsh realities of wartime life. The men, who were part of the 2nd Fire Brigade, were getting what sleep was possible during the hectic days and nights of enemy bombing. The bunk beds, which were a welcome respite from the chaos above ground, were a testament to the resourcefulness and resilience of the firemen in the face of adversity. The photograph, taken by an unknown photographer for the London Fire Brigade, offers a glimpse into the daily life of the firemen during the Blitz. It is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave men and women who put their lives on the line to keep London safe during a time of great danger and uncertainty. The image is a valuable historical document, capturing a moment in time that is both humbling and inspiring. It is a reminder of the importance of rest and resilience, especially in times of crisis, and the indomitable spirit of those who serve to protect and keep their communities safe.
