Loyalty by George Studdy

Loyalty -- Bonzo shows his loyalty in his own inimitable way by putting dirty pawprints all over his masters clothes, while Chee-Kee the Pekingese sleeps in a top hat. George Ernest Studdy (1878-1948), was the creator of Bonzo, a small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding who first appeared in the Sketch in 1922. The Bonzo craze swept the world resulting in postcards, annuals, toys and other merchandise. Credit should read: Estate of George Studdy/Gresham Marketing Ltd./ILN/Mary Evans Date: 25 April 1923

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming print by George Studdy, titled 'Loyalty,' Bonzo, the beloved small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding, demonstrates his unwavering devotion in his unique way. With paws covered in mud and dirt, Bonzo has left his distinctive pawprints all over his master's clothes, including a pristine shirt and trousers. The scene is further enlivened by the presence of Chee-Kee, the Pekingese, who sleeps soundly in a top hat, seemingly oblivious to the mess being made nearby. George Ernest Studdy, the creator of Bonzo, first introduced the mischievous canine to the world in the Sketch in 1922. The Bonzo craze that ensued resulted in an avalanche of merchandise, including postcards, annuals, toys, and other collectibles. This image, dated April 25, 1923, captures a moment of playful chaos, highlighting the contrast between the best of evening attire and the messy antics of pets. The scene also underscores the class difference between the human and canine worlds, as well as the enduring bond between man and dog. Bonzo's antics may have been messy, but they were also a testament to the unbreakable bond between master and pet. This print is part of the extensive archive of George Studdy's work held by Mary Evans Picture Library and is a delightful reminder of the 1920s and the enduring appeal of the mischievous Bonzo.
