EDITORS COMMENTS
Margaret of Anjou: The Valiant Queen of Henry VI and Her Role in the Wars of the Roses This evocative portrait captures the determined and regal presence of Margaret of Anjou (1430-1482), Queen of Henry VI, during one of the most tumultuous periods in English history. Born in Sicily in 1430, Margaret was a member of the powerful House of Anjou, which ruled over the Kingdom of Naples. At the age of 15, she married the English king, Henry VI, in 1445, marking the beginning of her influential and controversial reign. Margaret's role in English history is inextricably linked to the Wars of the Roses, a series of civil conflicts between the House of Lancaster, to which she belonged, and the House of York. Margaret was a passionate and active participant in these wars, leading her troops into battle on several occasions and rallying support for her husband and son, Edward, Prince of Wales. Her military prowess and determination earned her the nickname 'The Maid of Anjou' and solidified her reputation as a formidable queen consort. Despite her military exploits, Margaret's reign was not without controversy. Her aggressive pursuit of power and her perceived favoritism towards the Lancaster faction fueled resentment and opposition, particularly from the Yorkist faction. In the end, Margaret and her family were forced into exile, and she spent her final years in France. This striking portrait, likely created during Margaret's lifetime, captures the intensity and resolve of this remarkable queen. With her piercing gaze and regal bearing, Margaret of Anjou stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of a woman who played an active part in shaping the course of English history during the Wars of the Roses.
