The monument, designed by Emilio Gallori and completed in 1895, honors the Italian military and political leader who played a pivotal role in the Italian unification and the Risorgimento, or resurgence, of Italy as a modern European nation. Garibaldi, born in 1807, was a charismatic figure and a symbol of patriotism and revolutionary spirit. He gained fame for his leadership in the Carbonari, a secret society dedicated to the overthrow of foreign rule in Italy.
