EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking handcoloured lithograph, we find Colonel-General in the French Hussars of the Napoleonic era, proudly depicted in his full military regalia. The Colonel-General, an esteemed rank in the French military hierarchy, is shown wearing the distinctive uniform of the Hussars, a cavalry unit renowned for their agility and daring charges on the battlefield. The Colonel-General's attire consists of a dolman, a short, double-breasted jacket with lapels and a standing collar, adorned with gold braid and buttons. Over the dolman, he wears a pelisse, a long, waist-length coat with a lapel and a fur-trimmed collar, which served as an outer layer in colder weather. The sabretache, a leather pouch worn on the left hip, holds the Colonel-General's military documents and personal items. He completes his ensemble with high, black boots, and a schako, a tall, fur-trimmed hat with a distinctive upturned brim. The Colonel-General's military bearing is evident in his posture, as he gazes confidently into the distance, his sabre at his side. The intricate details of his uniform, from the gold braid to the fur trim, are expertly rendered in this handcoloured lithograph, which is a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship of the time. This image is taken from "Costumes Historiques de la France," a comprehensive and detailed record of historical French costumes, published by Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix, in Paris in 1852. The lithograph, produced by Leopold Massard, offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and military history of the Napoleonic era.
