EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Feather Star Crinoid, Oligometrides adeonae, also known as Comatula adeonae or Comatula dell'Adeona. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The intricate illustration was engraved by Corsi, with drawings by Jean Gabriel Pretre and direction by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin, a French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, is renowned for his exceptional work in natural history illustrations. The Feather Star Crinoid is a type of brittle echinoderm, characterized by its feathery arms, which are covered in small, tube-like structures called ophiomastix. These arms are annulose, meaning they have rings or bands, and are often compared to the arms of an Ophiura or Ofiura starfish. The Feather Star Crinoid is a fascinating marine creature that was well-studied during the 19th century. Its intricate and delicate appearance made it a subject of great interest to naturalists and illustrators alike. This exquisite engraving captures the beauty and detail of this unique echinoderm, providing a window into the natural world of over 180 years ago.
