EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Plee after an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, showcases three fascinating amphibian species: the Fire Salamander (Salamandra salamandra), the Smooth Newt (Triturus vulgaris), and the Spectacled Salamander (Salamandrina terdigitata). The engraving, taken from Bernard Germain de Lacepede's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, published in Paris in 1825, captures the intricate details and unique characteristics of each creature. The Fire Salamander, also known as the Terrestrial Salamander, is a popular European species, easily recognized by its bright orange or red coloration with black spots. This amphibian is fully terrestrial and is adapted to a wide range of habitats, from forests to grasslands. The Smooth Newt, or Common Newt, is a semi-aquatic species, characterized by its smooth, olive-green or brown skin, and distinctive yellow or orange belly. They are widespread throughout Europe and are known for their ability to regenerate lost limbs. The Spectacled Salamander, named for the dark spots around its eyes, is a small, brightly colored species native to the Iberian Peninsula. They are primarily terrestrial, but require access to water for breeding. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the natural history of these remarkable creatures but also highlights the skill and artistry of the engraver and illustrator. It is a testament to the natural world's beauty and the importance of documenting and preserving it for future generations.
