EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured woodblock engraving is a beautiful example of botanical illustration from the 16th century. The image depicts three different plants: Pellitory of the Wall, Parietaria officinalis, Elatine, and an unknown species. The central plant is identified as Pellitory of the Wall, also known as Common Pellitory or Wall Pellitory, a creeping herb that grows on walls and other structures. Its leaves are covered in tiny hairs, giving it a velvety texture, and it produces small, white flowers. The plant was widely used in traditional medicine for various ailments, including coughs, sore throats, and kidney problems. The second plant is identified as Elatine, but the exact species is uncertain. Elatine is a genus of aquatic plants, characterized by their slender stems and small, white flowers. They were used in traditional medicine for treating conditions such as gout and rheumatism. The third plant is an unknown species, and its identification is based on the illustration alone. The intricate details of the engraving reveal the delicate structures of the plant's leaves and flowers, making it a valuable addition to any botanical collection. This illustration is from Adam Lonicer's Krauterbuch, or Herbal, published in Frankfurt in 1557. The atlas contains over 1,200 botanical illustrations, making it an important resource for the study of 16th-century botany. This particular print is from a 17th-century pirate edition, which includes captions in Latin, Greek, French, Italian, German, and English manuscript. The use of multiple languages reflects the international reach of botanical knowledge during this period.
