In this intriguing handcoloured copperplate engraving designed and etched by Thomas Rowlandson, we find ourselves in the midst of a raucous dinner party scene from Reverend James Beresford's "Miseries of Human Life," published by Ackermann in 1808. The image captures the moment of greeting between two tired and drunken men, their limbs heavy with the weight of excess and the passage of time. The man on the left, dressed in the attire of a foxhunter, clutches a stamp or seal in one hand, while extending the other for a handshake.
