EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the intricate beauty of an 88 mm German artillery shell case engraved at the Bezalel School in Jerusalem. The inlaid silver and copper damascene work depicts Rachel, symbolizing mourning and grief, sitting and weeping for the victims of the devastating riots in Poland during 1918 and 1919. In the background, Jerusalem stands tall as a beacon of hope amidst tragedy.
A pomegranate tree by Rachel's side adds a touch of symbolism, representing fertility, abundance, and righteousness. The extensive Hebrew text engraved in brass around the top references Jeremiah 31:14, emphasizing the deep sorrow felt by Rachel for her lost children.
The Hebrew letters on the base are inspired by I Samuel Chapter 25 Verse 29, offering a prayer for eternal life and peace for those who have passed. This trench art piece is not just a stunning work of craftsmanship but also serves as a poignant reminder of historical events that shaped our world.
Through this artwork, we are reminded of the enduring power of memory and resilience in times of darkness. It stands as a tribute to those who have suffered injustice and serves as a testament to humanity's unwavering spirit in overcoming adversity.
