EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative vintage photograph captures the moment of disembarkation for Australian and New Zealand soldiers aboard the RMS Mauretania as they approach the shores of Gallipoli in the Dardanelles during World War I. The Mauretania, a grand ocean liner of the era, had been commandeered by the British Navy to transport troops to the Eastern Mediterranean. The soldiers, many of them young and eager, gaze out at the unfamiliar landscape with a mixture of anticipation and apprehension. The boats, manned by sailors in navy uniforms, are lowered into the water, ready to ferry the troops to the beaches. The sun casts a warm, golden glow over the scene, illuminating the soldiers' uniforms and the rippling water. In the background, the silhouette of the Mauretania can be seen, a symbol of hope and safety amidst the chaos of war. The photograph, part of The Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a poignant glimpse into history, transporting us back to a time of bravery, sacrifice, and uncertainty.
