Sir William Gull

Sir William Gull (1816 - 1890), studied medicine at St Guy's in London. In 1872 Gull was made a Baronet and became physician to Queen Victoria, treating the Prince of Wales for typhoid. In 1876 he was involved with the infamous Bravo poisoning trial. He died in 1890, but immediately came under suspicion as the death certificate was signed by his brother-in-law, which was not usual medical practice. A medium trying to track down Jack the Ripper, alleged that Gull was still alive and had been certified insane, under a different name.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic figure of Sir William Gull, a prominent physician and baronet who served as the personal physician to Queen Victoria. Known for his expertise in medicine, Gull treated the Prince of Wales for typhoid and was involved in the infamous Bravo poisoning trial in 1876. However, Gull's legacy is shrouded in mystery and controversy. Following his death in 1890, suspicions arose when it was discovered that his death certificate had been signed by his brother-in-law, a departure from usual medical practice. These suspicions were further fueled by claims made by a medium attempting to track down Jack the Ripper, alleging that Gull was still alive and had been certified insane under a different name.
