EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the grandeur and historical significance of the Duke of Wellington Statue in Aldershot, Hampshire, England. Originally erected in 1846, the statue was built to commemorate Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), a renowned military leader and statesman who famously defeated Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. However, the statue, which depicts the Duke on horseback, was considered an eyesore by Queen Victoria, and in August 1885, it was relocated to Aldershot Military Town. The move of the statue to Aldershot, which was then the largest military camp in the world, was no small feat. It required the dismantling of the monument, transportation to a new location, and reassembly. The Duke of Wellington had strong connections to the military, having served as a Colonel of the 33rd Regiment of Foot, which was based in Aldershot. This association made the town an appropriate new home for the statue. The photograph, taken in the late 1880s during the Victorian era, showcases the statue in its new setting amidst the lush greenery of Aldershot Military Town. The statue remains a cherished landmark and a reminder of the rich military history of the area. The 19th century comes to life through this evocative image, offering a glimpse into the past and the enduring legacy of the Duke of Wellington.
