EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of truth for the British Paratroops as they land on the outskirts of Arnhem during Operation Market Garden on September 17, 1944. Taken by Sergeant D.M. Smith of the Army Film and Photographic Unit, the image is part of a collection of 75 official photographs and photocopies related to the 1st Airborne Division's involvement in the ill-fated mission. The paratroops can be seen descending from their aircraft, their faces a mix of determination and apprehension, as they prepare to face the unknown dangers of the battlefield below. The outskirts of Arnhem were the initial objective of the operation, and the successful capture of the city was crucial for the success of the larger mission. However, the Germans were well-prepared and the paratroops faced heavy resistance upon landing. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers who took part in this pivotal moment in World War Two history. Belonging to the late Christopher Keegan, a veteran of the Parachute Regiment, this photograph offers a unique insight into the experiences of those who fought in the Battle of Arnhem.
