EDITORS COMMENTS
September 1797: The Arrest of General Pichegru - A Turning Point in the French Revolution This evocative image captures the moment of General Jean-Baptiste Jourdan's troops apprehending General Jean-Charles Pichegru on the grounds of treason in Paris, France, on September 12, 1797. The French Revolution, which had begun in 1789, was in full swing, and the political landscape was fraught with intrigue and danger. Pichegru, a prominent military leader and former ally of Maximilien Robespierre, had been suspected of plotting against the Directory, the ruling body of the French Republic. The evidence against him was mounting, and the Directory, fearing a potential coup, ordered his arrest. The general was taken to the infamous Conciergerie prison in Paris, where he was to await trial. However, his arrest was not the end of the story. In an audacious escape, he managed to flee to the Dutch Republic, where he planned a royalist rising to overthrow the French Republic. But fate was not on his side. Betrayed by his own men, Pichegru was captured and returned to France in 1799. He was put on trial and found guilty of treason. On October 28, 1799, he was strangled in his cell at the Fort de l'Écluse in Paris. This print, produced by Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in French history, a time of political upheaval and personal drama. The image serves as a reminder of the complexities and uncertainties of the French Revolution and the high stakes involved in the struggle for power.
