EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph from 1979, Princess Margaret, the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II, is seen meeting Metropolitan Police officers during a visit to the Commissioner's Mess in London. Among those present are Assistant Commissioner John Gerrard, Commander Daphne Skillern, and Inspector Annette Payne. The Princess is surrounded by a line of officers, both male and female, all dressed in their full uniforms. The women officers, known as WPCs (Women Police Constables), are wearing checked, cravat-style blouses and skirts, while the men are in their traditional blue uniforms with ties and tiepins. Princess Margaret, dressed in a summery, floral dress, is smiling and engaging with the officers as she greets them one by one. Assistant Commissioner Gerrard, wearing his epaulets and a cravat, stands to the side, watching the introductions with a proud expression. Commander Skillern, the first woman to reach the rank of Commander in the Metropolitan Police, is seen in the background, also wearing a cravat and a checked jacket. Inspector Payne, the first female inspector in the Met, is standing next to the Princess, looking attentively at the scene. The photograph captures a moment of warmth and camaraderie between the Princess and the officers, showcasing the respect and admiration that the British public had for their royalty and their police force during the 1970s. The image is a testament to the important role that the police played in the community, and the connection that they shared with the people they served.
