EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph from the late 1870s, Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, later known as the Duchess of Teck, is captured in a tender moment with three of her beloved children. The princess, who was the eldest daughter of Prince Francis, Duke of Teck, and Princess Mary of Teck, was a cherished member of the British royal family. The image showcases the princess in her regal yet approachable demeanor, dressed in an elegant Victorian gown, her plump figure exuding a sense of warmth and nurturing. Her three children, including future Queen Mary (pictured lower left), are seated around her, their playful expressions and casual attire contrasting with their mother's formal appearance. The eldest child, a boy, sits on the princess's lap, while the other two, a girl and a boy, playfully interact with their mother and each other. The scene exudes a sense of familial love and connection, offering a glimpse into the private world of the royal family during the Victorian era. Princess Mary Adelaide's life was marked by tragedy and triumph. She lost her husband, the Duke of Teck, in 1897, and her eldest son, Duke of Albany, left the family in 1897 due to his involvement with a notorious American divorcee. However, her youngest daughter, May, who is seen in this photograph, went on to become Queen Consort of King George V in 1896, making her one of the most influential figures in British royal history. This photograph, with its timeless depiction of a loving mother and her children, serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring bond between family and the passage of time.
