EDITORS COMMENTS
Final Preparations for the Launch of the Majestic Queen Mary Ocean Liner, September 1934 This evocative photograph captures the final moments before the historic launch of R.M.S. Queen Mary, hull number 534, on 26 September 1934. With thousands of onlookers gathered to witness the event, the preparations were in full swing. Hundreds of tons of tallow, soft soap, and other lubricants were meticulously distributed over the surface of the launching-ways to ensure a smooth slide into the water for the colossal ship. The immense weight of the Queen Mary required the assembly of a substantial chain cable system, which would serve as drags to prevent her from advancing too rapidly once she was afloat. The Queen Mary, a symbol of luxury and elegance, was the consort to King George V of Britain and marked a new era in passenger cruising. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the shipbuilding industry during the 1930s, a time when steamliners reigned supreme in the realm of oceanic transport. The anticipation and excitement were palpable as the world waited for the launch of this magnificent vessel, which would go on to become an iconic symbol of Cunard Line's maritime legacy. This image, taken by Illustrated London News Ltd/Mary Evans, transports us back to a bygone era and offers a unique perspective on the meticulous process of launching a steamship of such monumental proportions.
