EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the noble visage of Robert Lindsay, 1st and last Viscount of Wantage, a Scottish soldier and Victoria Cross recipient. Born on March 25, 1832, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Lord Wantage's military career began at the tender age of 16 when he enlisted in the 73rd Foot Regiment. His exceptional bravery and leadership were soon recognized, and he rose through the ranks to become a lieutenant in the 73rd Foot and later a captain in the 1st Bengal Cavalry. The photograph portrays Lord Wantage in his later years, with a distinguished air and a proud bearing that speaks to his illustrious military past. He is best known for his actions during the Indian Mutiny of 1857, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for valor in the British military. Lord Wantage's citation reads, "For gallantly leading his men under a heavy fire, and for his coolness and determination in the face of the enemy." Despite his military success, Lord Wantage's life was not without tragedy. He lost his first wife, Lady Mary, in childbirth in 1864, and his second wife, Lady Agnes, died by suicide in 1897. Lord Wantage passed away on February 16, 1901, leaving behind a legacy of courage and honor. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a remarkable man who dedicated his life to serving his country and inspiring others through his bravery on the battlefield.
