Born in Hauteville-la-Hougue, Normandy, France, in 1031, Roger I rose to become one of the most formidable military leaders of the Middle Ages. The Norman conquest of Sicily began in 1060 when Roger, along with his brother Robert Guiscard, was sent by their uncle, Duke William of Normandy, to claim the island for the Normans. After a series of successful campaigns, Roger was crowned Count of Sicily in 1072, marking the beginning of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily. Roger I was a skilled military strategist and a shrewd ruler. He expanded the Norman territories in Sicily, subduing the Arab and Byzantine forces and establishing a strong Norman presence on the island.
