EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative postcard captures the fiery spectacle of Moreni, a town in Dambovita County, Romania, that made history as the first place in the country and the third in the world to extract oil in 1691. In September-October 1925, Moreni was once again in the global spotlight as an oil fire raged for six weeks, turning day into night with its intense glow. The cause of the fire remains uncertain, but it is believed to have started in one of the numerous oil derricks that dot the landscape. The image shows the fiery inferno, with thick black smoke billowing from the oil wells and the derricks silhouetted against the fiery backdrop. The oilhead, a critical component of the drilling process, can be seen at the top of one of the derricks, seemingly blown back by the force of the flames. The historical significance of Moreni as a pioneering oil-producing region is underscored by the enduring image of this oil fire, a testament to the industry's early days and the risks involved in harnessing the earth's natural resources.
