EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken in April 1919, we see renowned British aeronautical engineer, Roy Chadwick, standing proudly next to the first prototype of the Avro 534 Baby. The Avro 534 was a groundbreaking design for its time, representing an early step towards the development of modern transport aircraft. The Avro 534 Baby was a single-engine biplane, designed and built by the Avro Company under the leadership of Chadwick. With a wingspan of just 28 feet and a length of 25 feet, the Baby was a compact and agile aircraft, capable of carrying two passengers and a pilot. It was powered by a 100 horsepower Le Rhone rotary engine, which gave it a top speed of around 80 miles per hour. Despite its promising design, the Avro 534 Baby had a short-lived career. Only one prototype was ever built, and it was involved in a fatal crash during its third test flight on May 1, 1919, which claimed the life of the test pilot. The cause of the crash remains unclear, but it is believed that a wing strut may have failed during the flight. Roy Chadwick went on to design many other successful aircraft, including the Avro Anson, Avro Anson Mk.I, and the famous Avro Lancaster bomber. The Avro 534 Baby, however, remains a footnote in aviation history, a reminder of the risks and challenges that come with pioneering new technologies. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in aviation history, with Chadwick standing before the first prototype of an aircraft that, while short-lived, represented an important step forward in the development of transport aircraft. The image is a testament to the vision and determination of a brilliant engineer and the thrill of innovation in the early days of flight.
