Queen Victoria shown with members of her family shortly after the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales, mourning a bust of her late husband, Prince Albert. To the left is Edward, Prince of Wales with his new wife, Alexandra. Seated to the left is Princess Louise. The Queen reads to her youngest child, Princess Beatrice while Prince Leopold kneels on the floor. Princess Helena stands next to her brother-in-law, Grand Duke Louis of Hesse, and his wife, Princess Alice sits by his side. EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures Queen Victoria and her family in deep mourning, gathered around a bust of the late Prince Albert, just shortly after the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales, Edward and Alexandra, in December 1863. The Queen, dressed in black, is seen reading to her youngest child, Princess Beatrice, while Prince Leopold, her grandson, kneels on the floor. Seated to the left of the Queen is Princess Louise, the eldest daughter of Victoria and Albert, who was 21 years old at the time. To the Queen's left, Edward and Alexandra stand, the new Prince and Princess of Wales. Grand Duke Louis of Hesse and his wife, Princess Alice, are also present, with Helena, Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, standing next to the Grand Duke. This family gathering emphasized the continued presence of Prince Albert in their lives, as it was the last alliance he and the Queen had discussed and agreed upon before his untimely death in 1861. The image, taken by the renowned photographer ILN, underscores the profound sadness and sense of loss felt by the royal family as they moved forward in the wake of Albert's passing.
