EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enduring legacy of the past at Polygon Wood in Belgium, where the remnants of Scotts Bunker stand just behind the New Zealand National Memorial. The bunker, a testament to the brutal realities of the First World War, is named after Lt-Col Allan Humphrey Scott DSO, the Commanding Officer of the Australian 56th Battalion. The 56th Battalion advanced through the wood on September 26, 1917, during the Battle of Polygon Wood in the Ypres Salient of the Western Front. Tragically, Lt-Col Scott was killed in action on October 1, 1917, and is now buried in the adjacent Polygon Wood Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery. To visit the bunker, one must climb a small wall from the New Zealand Memorial, adding an air of mystery and intrigue to this poignant site. This image, taken in 2011 by Holt's Battlefields Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online, serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during the First Great War, a conflict that forever changed the course of history.
